Deze collecties werden gedigitaliseerd van diverse mediabronnen microfilm and microfiche, journals and serial publications, en voor een groot deel ook uit divers "archival material". Belangrijke bijdragen uit bibliotheken en partners van alle delen van de wereld (American and Canadian Libraries), Europe end Asia, rin meer dan 184 talen.

De site werd ontwikkeld en gesteund door de Print Disabled community, OpenLibrary bevat werken die tot het openbare domein behoren maar ook hedendaagse werken.
